As with any major transition, QGIS 4.0 is primarily aimed at advanced users wishing to experiment and contribute. The recommended version for production will be 4.2 LTR, scheduled for late 2026.

Whilst opening existing projects generally poses no difficulty, plugin compatibility remains the main area of concern: many extensions developed for QGIS 3.x will need to be adapted for Qt6.
